A Thrilling Sensory Experience From SENSE!

Cantiacorum Foundation

Sense is a national disability charity supporting children and adults with deafblindness and complex disabilities. With our grant from Cantiacorum Foundation, we took families from Kent on a boat trip as part of a Sense family event. Two Sense practitioners led the event, facilitating conversation with the boat’s captain and helping the children overcome any barriers to participation. We know the families well from our 1-to-1 work with them, teaching alternative communication, movement and life skills suitable for those without sight or hearing. The event started with a health and safety discussion before leaving the harbour and going on a fast ride. It was a thrilling sensory experience for the children we support as they could experience it through the motion and wind, rather than vision and hearing. The children each had a turn being ‘captain’ of the boat and experience steering it. Many would think this impossible for someone who is deafblind but at Sense we know anything is possible with the right support.
